From the opulent emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, to the age-old traditions and elegantly-relaxed resorts of Oman, there’s so much to discover in this enthralling part of the world. Dubai dazzles with its stunning hotels, designer shops and scintillating nightlife; Abu Dhabi delights with the beautiful beaches of Saadiyat Island and the Louvre Abu Dhabi art gallery; and Oman surprises with its golden-sand bays and verdant oases of greenery.
Beyond the awe-inspiring glass skyscrapers and post-modern architecture, Arabia is also full of intoxicating Middle Eastern flavour, remaining true to its ancient culture and customs. Contrary to popular misconceptions, it’s still perfectly possible to find flavours of old Arabia in Dubai; head to the Bastakia Quarter’s labyrinth of winding streets dotted with 13th-century architecture, museums and galleries, or have fun bartering at the Deira Gold Souk. In Oman, spend some time exploring Muscat and discover the fragrant Muttrah Souk, where you can buy anything from spices and coffee to perfume and jewellery.
If you’re after fast-paced fun and adventure, there’s plenty of that, too. In Dubai, there are two main theme parks, Dubai Parks and Resorts and IMG Worlds of Adventure, while Abu Dhabi has Warner Bros. World and Ferrari World, where you’ll find the fastest roller-coaster in the world. There’s no shortage of waterparks either, with Aquaventure and Wild Wadi Waterparks in Dubai and Yas Waterworld in Abu Dhabi. If you’d prefer something a little more authentic, head out to the Dubai Desert for a thrilling four-wheel drive experience, then swap your car for a camel to try the traditional Bedouin mode of transport.
Natural wonders abound here, too. The waters off the coast of Oman contain a rich marine ecosystem, home to over 20 species of whale and dolphin, and the country’s interior is just as impressive, with jagged mountains, rusty red sands and historic fortresses.
