As the age-old saying goes, ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’. But with travel photography we would say it does a lot more than that; it gets people’s hearts racing and instils a yearning to book a flight to anywhere new to start exploring. We want to see where you’ve been and what’s caught your eye to make you capture that memory forever, in the form of an everlasting photograph.
To kick start the competition with some true inspiration, we have asked our favourite expert photographers to share their favourite shots from their travels, along with some top tips for making the most out of your camera on holiday.

The Competition
All you need to do is send your favourite photograph to photocomp@caribtours.co.uk with your name, email address and telephone number, and tell us where the photo was taken.

Entries can be submitted from 1 January 2017 - 14 March 2017.
The competition will be judged by photographer Matthew Williams-Ellis on 1 March 2017, and the winner will be announced on 17 March 2017 by email and on Facebook.

What is the photo capturing: No image conjures up more of a desire to visit Sri Lanka than that of the stilt fishermen. I took this photo at dawn, wandering along Midigama’s beautiful white sandy beach, which made this sunrise photo trip a winner before I had even taken my camera out of my bag.
What inspired you to take the photo: There is no more iconic image of Sri Lanka than these stilt fisherman. The difficulty is finding a unique way to capture a subject that has been photographed thousands of times before. I decided I would focus on two ideas; long exposures and photographing the fisherman in their setting, rather than focusing too closely on the individuals.
Travel photography tips: One of the main things I teach on my travel photography workshops is that to be a good travel photographer, you need to adopt a proactive, not reactive mind set. Spending time thinking about the type of photos you want to take will increase the chances of you coming away with photos you are proud of. Another concept worth mentioning is simplicity; look at a scene, identify the interesting elements that make it unique or attractive, and don’t include all the other clutter. Daniel Alexander Harris

What is the photo capturing: This was taken from the roof of a skyscraper in midtown New York facing downtown towards the iconic Empire State Building with the restoring skyline of lower Manhattan in the distance.
What inspired you to take the photo: When I’m in New York I can’t help but get neck-pain from looking up in wonder at the buildings towering over you. I wanted to get a better look at what I was dealing with. I can’t recommend enough going to one of the observation decks on the main island or even finding a quiet roof-top in Brooklyn or Greenpoint to get that for-your-eyes-only view of the city, you’ll fall in love with that.
Travel photography tips: Choose a camera, whether it’s an iPhone or a flagship DSLR that you are happy to carry with you everywhere – that way, whatever the weather, you’ll be taking photos. I personally would really recommend picking up a high resolution mirrorless body and a 35mm prime lens if you’re more into people photography or, if you are all about the landscapes, you’re going to want a full frame DSLR and an ultra-wide angle like the Canon 11-14mm F4 or the Nikon 14-24mm F2.8. Tommy Clarke

What is the photo capturing: Two kayakers paddling over a reef off the tropical island of Antigua.
What inspired you to take this photo: I wanted to use the pattern of the reef to create an abstract looking image, that only reveals itself when you see the kayakers. I love that people tend to think its a painting when they first see it.

Only one entry per person. All entries must be received by 14 March 2017, any photos submitted after this time will not be included in the competition. The Prize is a Canon EOS 700D Digital SLR + 18-55mm Lens and is not exchangeable for anything else or cash alternative. Photographs will be used on social media, newsletters and the Caribtours and Private Travel Company websites until 28 February 2018. Caribtours will not own the rights to these images, but the photographer will be credited on the image for each use. The photos entered into the competition will not be shared with anyone else without the photographer’s permission. The winner will be notified by email, if the winner fails to claim the prize within 1 month of being notified, the prize will be forfeited.
